Jane Read is a female aardvark from Elwood City, Pennsylvania, the mother of Arthur, Dora Winified, and Kate Read. A former tax account, Jane worked from home until getting a minimum-wage job at Chickin Lickin'.
Jane was consistently physically abused by her husband, David, and eventually begun an extramarital affair with Ed Crosswire. After learning about the affair, David left Jane and moved to Crown City. The couple later reconciled and Jane abandoned her children to be with David.
Originally strong-willed and generally put-together, Jane became more stressed and unhinged after her husband left her and the family became less financially secure. For a period, she allowed Laverne Crosswire and her two children to live in the Reads' home after Laverne left her husband.
